Summer Fun at the DuPont Nature Center

The DuPont Nature Center, owned and operated by the Delaware Division of Fish and Wildlife serves as a science-based educational facility for schools, families, and other organized groups. It is designed to connect people with nature and will instill an appreciation for the ecological significance of the region. The following programs are being offered to the public free of charge. Space is limited and you should pre-register by calling the center at 302-422-1329. This schedule is subject to change.
Family Birding 101
June 4, 2008, Wednesday Evening, 6:30pm to 8:00pm
It's simple getting started in bird watching. It's fun involving your family or even your friends. Bring your interest and we'll share our knowledge of bird identification and viewing opportunities in and around the Mispillion. Dress for the weather and bring your binoculars, viewing scopes, and field guides. Don't have binoculars or birding guides? We do!
A Day In The Salt Marsh
June 14, 2008, Saturday Afternoon, 1:00pm to 2:00pm
Why are salt marshes important? What causes tides? Enjoy an afternoon in one of the most dynamic habitats on earth: the salt marsh. You'll learn about crabs, snails, terrapins, fish, shorebirds, oysters and River otters. Please dress appropriately for this outdoor hands-on activity.

What has blue blood, a mouth between its legs, and eyes scattered around its body? A Horseshoe Crab! Visit with the live residents of the nature center and learn about these amazing creatures.
JAKES Event
June 21, 2008, 9:00 am to 3:00pm
In partnership with the Delaware State Chapter of the National Turkey Federation! If you are 17 years old or younger and you like hunting, fishing, hiking, camping or just being outside with your family, This program for you. JAKES stands for Juniors Acquiring Knowledge, Ethics and Sportsmanship. The day will be full of outdoor adventures and lunch will be provided. YOU MUST PRE-REGISTER FOR THIS EVENT.
Living With Cold Blood
June 28, 2008, Saturday Morning, 10:00 am to Noon
Frogs, lizards, turtles, and snakes cannot keep their blood warm. How do they survive? Join JCM Environmental with their live friends for a morning of interesting facts about amphibians and reptiles.
Kayaking the Mispillion
Join us again this year as we explore the many facets of the salt marshes around the Mispillion River. You'll enjoy native wildlife along with the sights and sounds that make the bay so beautiful. A brief lesson will be given on paddle strokes. There is a fee for this course. Kayaks are available for rent; single, $25.00 and tandem, $35.00 (includes paddles and life jackets). You may bring your own kayak; the fee is $15.00. "Return to Nature" is conducting these paddles and will donate $5 per boat back to the nature center. Please dress accordingly. Bring your own beverages, sunscreen and insect repellent.
Boat rental is limited; please pre-register even if you bring your own kayak.

July 13, 2008, Sunday, starting at 8:00 am FULL DAY kayaking tour of the Mispillion starting at the Milford Police Station and ending at the DuPont Nature Center. THE FEE for rental is $35.00 per single kayak, $45.00 per tandem. You may bring your own kayak; the fee is $20.00. Pack your lunch and beverages. Meet at the DuPont Nature Center.
